History of the automobile and road traffic safety

This video will take you on a journey through time, tracing the milestones and breakthroughs that have shaped the history of the automobile and road traffic safety. The early experiments with steam-powered cars, like the Fardier à vapeur, paved the way for the development of modern automobiles. The introduction of electric cars, internal combustion engines, and regulatory changes like the Locomotives Act of 1865 shaped the industry. The Brass era saw the introduction of recognizable and standardized automobiles, with key developments like electric ignition systems, independent suspension, and four-wheel brakes. Safety features like safety glass and seat belts became more prominent, leading to the establishment of the Automobile Safety League of America. The introduction of traffic lights in the early 20th century marked a significant milestone in road traffic safety. The first electric traffic light was developed in Salt Lake City in 1912, and the first four-way, three-color traffic light was created in Detroit in 1920. The early 20th century saw the introduction of car safety features such as four-wheel hydraulic brakes, seat belts, and padded dashboards. The post-war era witnessed significant advances in safety technology, including the introduction of disc brakes, airbags, and anti-lock braking systems. The 1960s and 1970s saw the introduction of regulatory changes, including the mandatory installation of front outboard lap belts, padded instrument panels, and white reverse lamps. In the 1980s and 1990s, advanced safety features such as traction control systems, stability control systems, and anti-skid braking systems became more widespread. The 21st century has seen a focus on electrification, with the introduction of hybrid and electric cars, as well as significant advancements in autonomous driving technology.
