Entry #24 — Peak Vihren 2914m · 4.5km up · 3.5km down · 1129m D+ · 2h30min ascent · With Vlado 3rd tallest peak in the Balkans. 2nd in Bulgaria. The Marble Throne of Pirin. Me and Vlado summited Vihren in 2 hours and 30 minutes — about an hour faster than the marked trail time. The descent took 1 hour 30 minutes. 1129 metres of elevation gain and loss, all in a day that started after 5 hours of sleep and hours of driving. Pirin is something else. The most beautiful mountain range in Bulgaria — marble peaks, wild ridges, the kind of scenery that doesn't feel entirely real when you're standing in it. Day one done. The summit is behind us. Tomorrow is something else entirely.
