Devourer's Scepter - Daily Beating Mohg with Every Weapon (#171)
Daily Mohg playlist: • Daily "Beating Mohg with Every Weapon" (We... Item description: Devourer's Scepter: "Scepter in the shape of a serpent devouring the world. This weapon will one day become the very symbol of the Lord of Blasphemy. One of the legendary armaments. A vision of the future briefly seen by Rykard in his final moments before being devoured by the great serpent." Description: The longest greathammer, though that isn't saying much. It does partial fire damage, but mostly physical damage if you ignore the Faith scaling. The moveset isn't special or anything, and the Ash of War is "Devourer of Worlds", a low-damaging fire-based fairly large AOE that restores 15% of max HP for each enemy hit. If you like healing, this skill is nice, but if you like dealing damage to enemies, this skill sucks. For context, Prayerful Strike heals 30% of max HP if it hits, but it is a fair amount slower and less ranged, though Prayerful Strike does hit for a whopping 40 poise damage. Let's talk about Bernahl instead, the Tarnished who wields this weapon. The shadow he casts falls long and heavily upon the ground, reflecting the duty-bound nature of the grace-guided Tarnished. He initially appears at Stormhill Shack as "Knight Bernahl", holding a Zweihander, helmetless, and peddling Ashes of War. His own words describe his friendly demeanor best: "There's a myriad of battle arts in these lands that I've yet to discover. Mementos of all the warriors who raised their arms in battle, lost, and died. A fine tale, all told, of true chivalric romance. That's how I fell in love with the sword, and the arts of combat. It grants meaning even to falling in battle, to death itself." Notably, one of the first things Bernahl asks of you is whether your faith in the guidance of grace holds firm. As a newcomer to the Lands Between, the significance of this question is likely lost on you. He later appears at the Volcano Manor as Recusant Bernahl, where he expresses surprise at seeing you and cautions you against the path of the recusant. Recusants are those who have rejected the Two Fingers and the Golden Order, instead deigning to hunt their fellow Tarnished in protest of the path set forth for the Tarnished. In the Volcano Manor's questline, he invites you to a 2v2, "to hunt some of the first Tarnished who sat at the Roundtable Hold", namely Errant Sorcerer Wilhelm and Vargram the Raging Wolf. Once Rykard is slain, Bernahl has this to say: "I harbour you no ill will. The strong take. Such is our code. Even he was prepared to meet a wretched end when he first took blasphemy unto his very flesh." His last appearance is when he invades the Tarnished at Crumbling Farum Azula, wielding the Devourer's Scepter that he is seen holding in the thumbnail of this video, and he guards a chest holding the Blasphemous Claw bequeathed by Ranni to Praetor Rykard, in the event that their conspiracies against the Erdtree should succeed and he should have need of a tool to battle against Maliketh in order to unseal the Rune of Death, known as the death of the demigods and the Black Blade. Despite being a Recusant, Bernahl has ever been a friendly and steadfast man guided by his principles. Regarding his motivations, we might turn to the following statements and item descriptions: "O Greater Will, hear my voice. I am the recusant Bernahl, inheritor of my brother's will, and you will fall to my blade. We refuse to become your pawns. Consider this fair warning." "Beasts are drawn to champions, and to lords. The beasts, their eyes and ears covered, represent an oath: "See nothing, hear nothing, doubt nothing, and carry on, along the path set in stone." And this armor befits a champion worthy of becoming a lord. And that is what Bernahl was. Until his maiden threw herself into the fire." Perhaps it was the wanton sacrifice demanded by the Greater Will that made Bernahl turn against the way of the world, to refuse to seek the throne of Elden Lord. Instead, Bernahl dedicated himself to an eternal fight against an ineffable being that has existed since time immemorial, who dictates the very fate of the Lands Between.
