Although "The Final Destination" is a retinal insult, the film was a financial mega-success. For this reason, Warner Bros. Pictures pulled some flimsy excuse out of its backside to justify another sequel. For the director and screenplay, New Line Cinema diligently recruited from Hollywood's second tier: Eric Heisserer, who had already proven his ability to repackage existing intellectual property with his script for the remake of "A Nightmare on Elm Street," and director Steven Quale, who had served as second unit director under James Cameron on films like Avatar and Titanic. Conclusion and Rating: Final Destination 5 tries hard to tick as many boxes as possible for the fans: More kills, the return of fan favorite Tony Todd, a bit more character development, the occasional witty one-liner, an expansion of the mythology surrounding Death and his list, and a host of Easter eggs and references to the other Final Destination films. The direction is also nothing to complain about; the effects look good for the most part, and director Steven Quale knows how to build tension during the crazy chain reactions. Final Destination 5 looks great, but at the end of the day, this film is telling exactly the same story we've already seen four times, and if you ask me, it's been told twice too many times. The plot and mythology go in circles. Some of the kills might be iconic—for example, the trip to the eye doctor—but somehow Final Destination 5 just doesn't stick in your mind. The Final Destination franchise has passed its peak; I'm more than saturated, and as a result, Part 5 slips somewhat undeservedly into insignificance. For this reason, I give Final Destination 5 a generous 5.5 out of 10.
