Das biedere Reboot eines verruchten Klassikers: Hellraiser (2022) | Filmkritik & Review

Hellraiser is the most disgraced franchise you can find on the market. Rights holder Miramax has so thoroughly gutted the brand that Pinhead's torture games seem like a beach vacation in comparison. Since 1996, Miramax has been churning out low-budget Hellraiser films to avoid losing the distribution rights. And at least six of the seven sequels feel like a root canal without anesthesia… or with too much anesthesia, leaving you feeling absolutely nothing and snoring in front of the TV. But all that was supposed to change in 2020: Clive Barker (author of the novels on which the Hellraiser films are based) reclaimed some of the marketing rights from Miramax and struck a deal with production studio Spyglass Media and streaming service Hulu. Compared to the awful direct-to-DVD releases, Hellraiser 2022 does a lot right: The Cenobites are hideous yet seductively portrayed, and the Hellraiser universe is meaningfully expanded around the Puzzle Box. But that's about it: Director David Bruckner stages beautiful images with soft blue tones and shimmering lights that reflect off the immaculate costumes of the Cenobites. This Hellraiser feels too clean, too tidy: The pulsating, forbidden eroticism of the original is barely perceptible here. Instead of a sexually transgressive experience, we get a prudish prelude combined with a terribly conservative family drama. For a lowbrow horror film, that's more than enough, but it falls far short of doing justice to a legendary IP like Hellraiser. I had hoped that Hellraiser would leave me with a queasy feeling, because it would push my boundaries both narratively and visually. Unfortunately, neither is the case. Compared to all the other depraved sequels, the 2022 Hellraiser is still one of the best films in the series. Especially for newcomers born after the 2000s, it's a good entry point into the genre.
