A MOW rail gang is a Maintenance‑of‑Way crew that performs hands‑on track work—replacing ties, driving spikes, installing rail, tamping ballast, and keeping the railroad’s physical infrastructure in safe, operating condition. What “MOW” means MOW = Maintenance of Way: the department responsible for the track, roadbed, bridges, signals, and related structures. Within MOW, “gang” refers to the field crew that actually executes the physical work on the line, often using specialized machinery and working in tight time windows between trains. What a MOW rail gang does Typical tasks include: Tie replacement: removing old wood/concrete ties and installing new ones. Rail work: cutting, drilling, and laying rail; installing joints, bolts, and clips. Fastening: driving spikes or installing other fasteners and tie plates to secure rail to ties. Ballast and surfacing: placing/cleaning ballast and using tampers/liners to set proper track geometry. Vegetation and site work: brush cutting and clearing around the right‑of‑way as part of broader MOW programs. Gangs are often organized as steel gangs, tie gangs, or combined high-production crews that can work independently or together on large rehab or new‑construction projects. How they operate Work is scheduled in “track time windows” when trains are held or restricted so the gang can occupy the track safely. Modern gangs use specialized MOW equipment (spike drivers, tie inserters, rail saws, tampers, etc.) to increase speed and precision. Railroads “right‑size” gangs (small, medium, large) to match the job and maximize workforce efficiency. See how all this comes together as the different CSX Railroad Departments all work together right in front of mobile cam number 2 that is on board Production Units 6. Now back to the tracks and all the action!!!
