#3: Accurate fitting of lathe gibs
In this, the third part of this series on upgrading my small lathe, I complete the two cross-slide gibs and fit them. This involves some careful measurement. I almost, but not quite, finish the cross-slide and take a detour into clamping work on machine tables, friction, and how to avoid mishaps. This topic arose because during the filming of this video work slipped twice due to inadequate clamping. In the next video I will fit this modified cross-slide which, in this configuration, I have designated as Mark I. In the meantime I have been designing a new longer and more accurate cross-slide to replace this one at a later stage. The advantage of delaying that until later is that it will enable me to use the lathe sooner to discover if there are other modifications I need to make for a more successful overall upgrade. The Mark II cross-slide will include a top-slide. Other plans include: a DC motor drive with speed control, a new chuck, suitable mounting, and possibly collets. Stay tuned! Comments and suggestions are welcome.
