World’s Oldest Wooden Church? | Exploring Greensted Church in Essex

Today I’m exploring Greensted Church — widely believed to be the world’s oldest wooden church and one of the oldest surviving wooden buildings in Europe. Hidden away in rural Essex near Ongar, this remarkable Saxon church dates back to around 1050 AD, with some earlier estimates suggesting parts may be even older. Built from massive upright oak trunks before the Norman Conquest of 1066, Greensted Church has survived for nearly 1,000 years. In this video, I take a look around the ancient wooden nave, the historic graveyard, and the fascinating history surrounding this unique medieval church. If you enjoy British history, ancient churches, hidden historic places, Saxon England, archaeology, and unusual travel destinations, this place is absolutely worth seeing. 📍 Location: Greensted Church, Essex, England #GreenstedChurch #Essex #SaxonChurch #AncientHistory #EnglishHistory #HistoricChurch #MedievalHistory #UKHistory ##HauntsandJauntsAdventure #darktourism 🌐 Follow me on social media: 📸 Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/hauntsandja... 🎬TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@hauntsandjaun... ☕️If you would like to support my adventures you can buy me a coffee here: https://buymeacoffee.com/Hauntsandjau... music - 'Sanctuary' by Scott Buckley - released under CC-BY 4.0. www.scottbuckley.com.au
