In this episode, we take the German Intercity (IC) double-decker train operated by Deutsche Bahn (DB), traveling all the way to Zurich, Switzerland. The train we ride is the Stadler KISS 4010, a Swiss-built double-decker train with a fascinating history. Originally delivered to Austria’s private railway WestBahn, the fleet was sold to Deutsche Bahn in 2022 due to high maintenance costs. Repainted from WestBahn’s sky-blue livery into DB’s red Intercity colors, the 4010 trains started a new chapter in Germany. However, after just two and a half years, these trains are already being retired and sold again—this time back to Austria, to none other than ÖBB (Austrian Federal Railways), WestBahn’s former rival. The story comes full circle! Even more interesting, ÖBB once had a legendary train class also called 4010, which ran from the 1960s until 2008 on long-distance services like the Transalpin. Some design elements of that older 4010 even inspired today’s flagship Railjet. Of course, the journey itself is as spectacular as the trains. The route from Germany to Switzerland offers non-stop scenic views, including rivers, forests, and picturesque towns. The highlight is the breathtaking Rhine Falls, the largest waterfall in Europe, which the train passes just 30 minutes before arriving in Zurich. In this video, you’ll not only see the beautiful Rhine Falls up close but also learn how to visit them.
