In this special episode, we introduce the newest trains in Italy, including the next-generation Frecciarossa 1000 and the innovative commuter train Caravaggio (nicknamed “Rock” by Trenitalia). We start with Caravaggio, a double-decker EMU designed for efficient mass transit in major Italian cities such as Milan, Rome, and Venice. Featuring USB power outlets and a modern interior, this train combines high capacity with passenger comfort. A new 6-car version has just been introduced, featuring several changes from the original 4- and 5-car sets. Our main feature is Italy’s fastest train: Frecciarossa 1000 (ETR400 series), Trenitalia’s flagship high-speed train. Even 10 years after its debut, production continues, with nearly 100 trainsets ordered – making it one of Europe’s best-selling high-speed trains. Originally co-developed by Bombardier (Germany) and Hitachi Rail (Japan), the ETR400 has been manufactured solely by Hitachi since 2021. In 2024, Hitachi unveiled a significantly upgraded version of the train – a “second generation” Frecciarossa 1000. While the iconic exterior design remains unchanged, the interior layout, traction systems, and onboard equipment have been completely redesigned. Extensive testing is currently underway, with commercial service scheduled to begin in late 2025. This new generation was not built just to add capacity – it is part of Trenitalia’s expansion plans into Germany. Starting in 2026, Frecciarossa trains will operate from Italy to Munich via the challenging Brenner Pass, replacing conventional locomotive-hauled trains. By 2028, services are expected to extend as far as Berlin. Frecciarossa services to France are also being expanded, and future routes to the UK are under consideration.
