Britain’s HST is finally nearing the end. In Scotland, some of the last regular High Speed Train services are still running — but replacement is already on the way from 2027. The HST — short for High Speed Train — was Britain’s answer to the need for faster long-distance rail travel in the 1970s. At the time, British Rail did not have the money to build brand-new high-speed lines on the scale of Japan’s Shinkansen, nor to electrify all of its main lines quickly. Instead, Britain developed a diesel-powered high-speed train with dedicated coaches, capable of running at 125 mph (200 km/h). Introduced in 1976, the HST transformed long-distance travel in Britain and became the face of InterCity rail for decades. Because true replacements took so long to arrive, HSTs remained in frontline service well into the late 2010s. From 2017 onwards, however, newer trains such as the Hitachi-built Class 800 began taking over across Britain. Even so, some HST sets found a new role in Scotland as Inter7City trains. After major refurbishment and accessibility upgrades, shortened formations of HST coaches continued to connect Edinburgh, Glasgow and northern Scottish cities. But even this Scottish afterlife is now approaching its end. The process of selecting replacement trains began in 2024, and new stock is due to arrive from 2027. So why is a train that was heavily refurbished and given a second life being replaced again so soon? As it turns out, this veteran express now faces several unavoidable problems. In this video, we take a closer look at the HST in its current Scottish form — the interior, the formation, the changes since previous visits, and the reasons why this iconic train is now nearing withdrawal.
