The locomotive featured in this video is the Italian FS E403 electric locomotive. It appeared in the mainland section of our recent Italian sleeper train journey, and at first glance it looks like a sleek and capable modern locomotive. With its long body, elegant front-end styling and ambitious technical specification, the E403 was originally planned as a powerful multi-purpose locomotive. It was supposed to work under several European electrification systems and haul everything from freight trains to express passenger services. Production began in 2005, at a time when Italian railways were facing major changes, including European regulations and the need for more flexible international operation. However, the E403 did not become the universal locomotive that had been expected. The project became complicated from the development stage. Designs were changed repeatedly, the original plan became increasingly difficult to realise, and the balance between technology, performance and cost never really worked out. Even after entering service, the E403 continued to suffer from problems. Instead of becoming a reliable all-purpose locomotive, it became difficult for railway operators to use effectively, and its role changed again and again. After being moved between different types of service, one of the places where the E403 finally found a more suitable role was on sleeper trains. That means the locomotive we encountered during our Italian night train journey was not just an ordinary traction unit — it was a machine carrying the story of Italian railway ambition, miscalculation and compromise.
