欠点しかない迷電気機関車 イタリア国鉄 E403型【#迷列車で行こう海外編 】
Previous Video • 宿より安い? イタリア最長級の寝台列車が人気の理由【#迷列車で行こう海外編 】 Welcome to LukaTravels, a channel dedicated to explaining and exploring railways around the world. Thank you for watching! In this video, we take a deep dive into one of Italy’s most controversial electric locomotives — the FS Class E403. Designed to survive EU regulations and intense international competition, the E403 was meant to be a next-generation, multi-system electric locomotive capable of hauling everything from high-speed passenger trains to heavy freight. With a sleek 20-metre-long body, a refined front design, and compatibility with all four European electrification systems, the concept sounded perfect on paper. Between 2005 and 2009, just 24 units were built. But in reality, the E403 became a textbook example of a failed railway project. From the very beginning, the locomotive suffered from technical issues, rising production costs, and compromised performance. Although it was originally planned as an export model, its lack of competitiveness meant that Trenitalia remained the only operator, and no overseas orders ever materialised. Even after entering service, problems continued. The E403 was repeatedly reassigned — from freight operations to passenger services — yet never found a role where it truly excelled. Its limitations made efficient operation difficult, leaving Italian State Railways struggling to justify its existence. Eventually, after years of trial and error, the locomotive found its final role hauling long-distance night trains — including the sleeper services featured in our previous Italy railway travel series. In this video, we tell the full story of the E403: its ambitious beginnings, why it failed, and how it ended up powering overnight trains from Milan and Rome to southern Italy. Sit back and enjoy the story of an Italian locomotive that promised everything — and delivered almost nothing.
