EPISODIO 3- 50 AÑOS IVO. Enfermería Oncológica. Instituto Valenciano de Oncología-IVO

3. EPISODE. IVO: Oncology Nursing: Caring Is Also Part of Treatment Over these 50 years, the IVO (Instituto de Oncología de Valencia) has evolved in treatments, technology, and outcomes. But there is essential work that makes all of this possible and truly reaches the patient: oncology nursing. Because alongside the specialists, the nursing team is the one that accompanies patients on the wards, in outpatient clinics, in the day hospital, in radiotherapy, or at home, day after day. In this episode of “IVO, 50 Years Body and Soul Against Cancer,” Nuria Casani, Head of Nursing, and Sonia Gimeno, Radiation Oncology Supervisor, explain the often-taken role of oncology nursing: welcoming patients when they arrive fearful, anticipating complications, monitoring side effects, educating the family, and ensuring continuity of care so that nothing is broken between the hospital and home. The conversation explores how nursing has changed in recent decades: more specialized, more autonomous, and more evidence-based, incorporating technology, protocols, and devices that prevent suffering and improve safety. It focuses on two key scenarios: the day hospital, where the primary goal is not to overwhelm with technical jargon, but to provide reassurance; and radiotherapy, a repetitive and highly technical process that demands meticulous management of toxicity to minimize treatment interruptions. Humanizing care here is not an add-on; it is an integral part of the treatment. Even in environments that may seem impersonal, the challenge is to make the patient feel "at home" and to build trust session by session, culminating in that oft-repeated phrase at the end: "I hope I don't have to come back, but I hope to see you outside."
