EPISODE 1. IVO: From a center founded to help people "die well" to a leader in the fight against cancer. Some anniversaries are measured in years, others in lives. The Valencian Institute of Oncology (IVO) celebrates half a century of supporting patients and their families and witnessing how oncology has radically changed: from cancer as an almost unspeakable word and palliative care as the primary focus, to early diagnosis, targeted therapies, and a comprehensive, person-centered care model. In this first episode of the series "IVO, 50 Years Body and Soul Against Cancer," we speak with Dr. Joaquín Gavilá, head of the Medical Oncology Department, and Dr. Elena Oliete, head of the Oncology Wellness Unit. With them, we explore the major shifts of our time: prevention as a decisive factor, increasingly personalized medicine, and the growing role of clinical research and artificial intelligence. The conversation also touches on a key change: integrating well-being into the scientifically based care pathway. Nutrition, physical exercise, physiotherapy, and mental health are no longer "extras" but rather integral parts of the treatment from the moment of diagnosis, with a clear objective: to improve the patient experience and their quality of life throughout the entire process.
