Finding the Rarest Deer in the Philippines
This is the most beautiful deer in the Philippines—but it’s also one of the rarest. The Visayan Spotted Deer is so elusive that very few people have ever seen it in the wild. Their population has declined to dangerously low levels, and if we don’t act now, they might disappear forever. In this three-part journey, I travel to Negros Island, one of the most biodiverse yet deforested regions in the Philippines, to find the Visayan Spotted Deer in the wild. But first, I need to understand their story. What led to their decline? What’s being done to protect them? And most importantly—can they still be saved? Photo of thumbnail by Mr. Justine Magbanua! 🔎 Will I be able to find these animals in the wild?
