But in the Philippines, local miners take it to a brutal extreme: digging for gold deep beneath the ocean floor. Plunging into pitch-black pits without scuba gear, men scrape sharp coral with strapped-on coconut shells and haul heavy stones on their bare shoulders. The whole operation hangs on one fragile lifeline. Divers breathe through a thin plastic hose clamped in their teeth, fed by a homemade compressor running unattended on the beach — if that single belt slips, there’s no way back to the surface. And the most dangerous part is still waiting on shore, where miners take on one last hazardous step to pull the raw gold from the rock. ─── Credit: Host: Andrew Fraser Editor: Toms D.
