Oasis - Live in Manchester (10th October 2001)

Oasis Location: Manchester, England, U.K Venue: Manchester Apollo Date: 10th October 2001 Source: Audience Recording This is Oasis’ first show in Manchester since December of 1997, and what a way to come back. This is the third gig (overall) of the 10 Years of Noise & Confusion Tour, and the first of two nights in the Manchester Apollo. After the incomplete recording at the London show, we get the first listen of the entire set for the leg. Two hours of new and old tracks, b-sides and covers from every album released up to that point, bar Be Here Now. Why Stand By Me or D’You Know What I Mean in a dropped key wasn’t included is obvious, but the only Giants era tracks are Go Let it Out and Gas Panic, with One Way Road getting the drop after Shepherd’s Bush. Despite this, along with The Hindu Times, Hung In A Bad Place totals up the newer songs to 4. This is the first circulating performance of the latter, and though i’m not a big fan of the track personally, I can see the appeal for it live in particular. She’s Electric from Morning Glory finally gets it’s first performance too, but Noel unfortunately but wisely sings it as Liam would not be able to do this one justice. The performance is the same from what we heard from the previous gig in basics. The band are in good spirits to be back in Manchester, (even if at this point they were only 2/5 of the group from there) and being Manchester, so are the crowd who as per usual on this tour sing along to almost every song, which is what the recording here captures very well. Noel does a cool intro to Supersonic but apart from that (and someone being out of tune in Morning Glory) and Liam restarting The Hindu Times, it’s just the basic playing you come to expect on the tour. Liam sounds decent here still, though we will begin to hear his voice very quickly tear down over the next few days. The main talking point on the band’s performance is Champagne Supernova as Johnny Marr from The Smiths (who gifted what was one of Noel’s first ever electric guitars) joins the lads onstage for this song over the two nights due to it being a hometown gig for him and Oasis in tandem. Last thing I should mention is the final encore number is Roll With It. It’s a really weak end to these gigs and I don’t know why it wasn’t played earlier in the set and just have Walrus as the grand finale but who knows. Overall if you’re looking for an early show from this leg that’s complete, this is your choice.
