Oasis - Live in Manchester (14th December 1997)
Oasis Location: Manchester, England, U.K Venue: G-MEX Centre Date: 14th December 1997 Source: Soundboard Recording 25 years ago, in one of their most famous gigs, Oasis arrive back in Manchester, this time at the smaller G-MEX Centre. This stop was particularly special, as it was going to be broadcast live by MTV on television and radio. Having played a first night the previous night for a test recording, this second night fortunately goes very well and is one of the best shows of the year. Liam’s voice has recovered from the Cardiff shows (where it seemed quite sore in spots) and delivers a great vocal performance tonight. After all these months of touring and shouting with all his power, his voice still isn’t quite as agile as it once was in September, but he stays consistent throughout the whole night, unlike several of the shows from the previous month. On a high quality soundboard like this one, Bonehead and Guigsy are far higher in the mix and make songs like Be Here Now and D’You Know What I Mean sound colossal. Noel is tight tonight, but strangely doesn’t do much in his playing tonight at all until the encores. (Maybe he felt he could take it easier in front of the home crowd). Magic Pie has been dropped from the setlist, so he only sings Don’t Look Back in Anger by himself, with Liam singing all the others. To replace it is Don’t Go Away which is situated in it’s usual spot. Liam does excellently on it, and is one of the best versions. The big question is though, do I personally think this show deserves this much love? Well, yes and no. It’s a homecoming gig and Liam’s voice sounds far better than the majority of November, and the high quality soundboard helps with the energy which can’t be ignored. However, I don’t believe this gig is the best of all Oasis shows. Many people say songs like Be Here Now, Stay Young, Some Might Say, D’You Know What I Mean, Don’t Go Away and All Around The World are all the best versions, to which I’d personally only agree to about two of those. But still, there’s no denying that after the last few months they’ve had of camaraderie and controversy, they are on top for these last few nights.
