Nazi officer who killed children in front of their parents - "The Beast" of Sobibor Gustav Wagner
Gustav Wagner was one of the most feared killers in the Nazi extermination system — a man whose brutality helped turn Sobibor into one of the most terrifying places in occupied Europe. Born in Vienna in 1911, Wagner embraced Nazism early, fleeing to Germany after his activities were banned in Austria. There he joined the SA and later the SS, eventually becoming part of the T4 “euthanasia” program, where the regime murdered the disabled in secret killing centers. At Hartheim, Wagner assisted in the cremation of victims, gaining the experience he would later bring to the death camps. In 1942, Wagner was transferred to Sobibor, one of the three Operation Reinhard extermination camps. As deputy commandant, he oversaw daily operations and quickly became infamous among prisoners for his sadism. Survivors described him as a towering, violent figure who killed with anything at hand — a shovel, an axe, a whip, or even his bare hands. He shot children, split open skulls, and carried out executions as if they were sport. To prisoners, he became known simply as “The Beast” or “The Wolf.” His cruelty extended beyond murder: Wagner subjected inmates to random beatings, humiliations, and horrific abuses that deepened the terror of camp life. When the Sobibor uprising took place in October 1943, Wagner happened to be away, but he returned to help dismantle the camp and murder the last prisoners forced to destroy all evidence of the killings. Himmler praised him personally as one of the most “deserving” men of Operation Reinhard. After the war, Wagner escaped to Brazil using a Nazi escape network. Decades later he was finally discovered, but Brazil refused extradition. In a 1979 BBC interview, Wagner showed no remorse, describing mass murder as “just another job.” On 3 October 1980, he was found dead with a knife in his chest — officially a suicide. Few believed it, and even fewer mourned him.
