Crimes of Nazi "Angel of Death" of Treblinka who killed prisoners dressed as medic - August Miete

August Miete was one of the most infamous perpetrators of the Holocaust and a central figure in the machinery of mass murder at the Treblinka extermination camp during the Second World War. Known by prisoners as the “Angel of Death of Treblinka,” Miete embodied the extreme brutality of Nazi genocide during World War 2. Born in 1908 in the German Empire, Miete lived an unremarkable early life as a miller and farmer. His transformation into a mass murderer began after the German invasion of Poland in September 1939, when Nazi Germany launched a campaign of occupation, terror, and racial annihilation. In 1940, Miete joined the Nazi Party and soon became involved in the T-4 Euthanasia Program, the secret operation designed to murder people with disabilities. At the Hadamar killing center, Miete worked directly inside gas chambers and crematoria, removing corpses, extracting gold teeth, and burning bodies. In 1942, as part of Operation Reinhard, Miete was transferred to occupied Poland and assigned to Treblinka, one of the deadliest extermination camps of the Holocaust. There, he was placed in charge of the Lazaret, a fake medical area where the sick, elderly, wounded, and children were taken and executed with a single shot to the back of the neck. Disguised as a medic, Miete personally murdered countless victims and referred to these executions cynically as “treatments.” Survivor testimony describes Miete as a sadist who killed without hesitation, often targeting prisoners who were weak, injured, or simply displeased him. He also took part in selections, beatings, and reprisals, and worked closely with Trawniki guards, Nazi collaborators trained to assist in mass murder. His cruelty far exceeded his low SS rank, driven by ideology, opportunism, and personal brutality. After Treblinka was dismantled in 1943, Miete was transferred to Italy and later returned to Germany. Arrested in 1960, he was tried during the Treblinka Trials and convicted for his role in the murder of hundreds of thousands of Jews. Sentenced to life imprisonment, he was controversially released in 1985 and died in 1987. There were no tears shed for August Miete — a man whose life became synonymous with industrialized death.
