Between 1946 and 1949, the Royal Netherlands Army (KL) and the Royal Netherlands East Indies Army (KNIL) formed the backbone of the Dutch military efforts in Indonesia during the Indonesian War of Independence (Police Actions). Rebuilt after World War II, they operated under the command of the KNIL, with Lieutenant General Simon Hendrik Spoor overseeing strategy. Their force grew to nearly 150,000 personnel, who primarily conducted operations on Java and Sumatra. They were organized into brigades rather than large divisions and fought a war with limited resources, making mainly use of surplus equipment from the Allies, while facing increasing logistical pressure and a shortage of manpower.
