De Atjeh-oorlog – Nederlands langste koloniale oorlog in Indonesië

The Aceh War, also known as the Aceh War, was a protracted conflict between the Kingdom of the Netherlands and the Sultanate of Aceh, which took place from 1873 to 1913. It was one of the longest and bloodiest colonial wars fought by the Netherlands in the Dutch East Indies (present-day Indonesia). The Netherlands already had a significant presence in the Dutch East Indies and sought to expand its influence in the region. However, the Sultanate of Aceh, on the island of Sumatra, resisted Dutch colonial rule and sought to maintain its independence. Dutch colonial rulers considered Aceh a crucial area due to its strategic location. Key figures included Christiaan Snouck Hurgronje and Joannes Benedictus van Heutsz. Later, Frits van Daalen also played a significant role. The Aceh War had a devastating impact on both the Acehnese population and the Dutch troops. It is remembered as one of the bloodiest conflicts in Dutch colonial history. It also contributed to nationalist sentiment and resistance against Dutch rule in the region.
