Had de Nederlandse HERKOLONISATIE van Indonesië ENIGE kans van slagen?

After World War II, the Netherlands waged war in Indonesia, despite having just emerged from German occupation, because Dutch leaders considered the colony economically, politically, and symbolically essential for national recovery. The Dutch East Indies had long been one of the most profitable parts of the Dutch empire, supplying oil, rubber, sugar, and other raw materials. After five years of German occupation, the Netherlands was economically devastated, and many policymakers believed that restoring control over Indonesia was essential for rebuilding the country. Dutch authorities were also firmly convinced that the Indonesian independence leaders had collaborated with the Japanese occupiers and that the August 1945 declaration of independence by Sukarno and Hatta lacked legal legitimacy. From The Hague's perspective, sovereignty had not been legally transferred, and order had to be restored before constitutional changes could take place. Dutch officials expected a negotiated transition to a reformed Commonwealth structure, but one that would be under continued Dutch influence. Domestic politics and public opinion also played a role. Many in the Netherlands still supported the empire, and the return of colonial rule was seen as a duty to protect citizens, minorities, and economic stability. Officials also underestimated the strength and unity of Indonesian nationalism and expected only limited resistance.
