The Caledonian Forest had been disappearing for six thousand years — through farming, shipbuilding, the Highland Clearances, and finally deer with no predators left to control them. By the 1950s, it existed as eighty isolated fragments, too far apart to even exchange seeds. In 1989, Trees for Life started doing something nobody expected to work on this scale: rebuilding it, one fence and one seedling at a time. This is not a quick story. The deer had to be managed before a single tree could survive. The first volunteers planted pines they knew they'd never see mature. It took until 2008 for the project to buy Dundreggan, its flagship 4,100-hectare site — and another twelve years before golden eagles returned to breed there for the first time in forty years. Today, more than two million native trees have gone into Highland soil. Pine martens are back. Capercaillie are recovering. Forest cover in Scotland has climbed from 5% to nearly 19% — though, as this video explains, that number hides as much as it reveals. A thousand years of loss doesn't reverse in forty. But for the first time in nine centuries, it's reversing at all.
