Ireland Said Its Ancient Forest Was Lost — One Sculptor Grew It Back With an Absurd Plan
Ireland Said Its Ancient Forest Was Lost — One Sculptor Grew It Back With an Absurd Plan In 2009, a sculptor bought twenty-one and a half acres of degraded farmland on Ireland's Beara Peninsula and made a decision that most land managers considered absurd. He stopped grazing, stopped planting, and simply gave the land a chance to recover. Fifteen years later, one of Europe's rarest ecosystems began rebuilding itself. This video explores the remarkable restoration of Bofickil Farm in West Cork, where Eoghan Daltun helped trigger the return of an Atlantic temperate rainforest—an ecosystem that once covered much of Ireland but now survives in only tiny fragments. At a time when Ireland retains just one percent of its native woodland, the project challenged conventional ideas about forest restoration. Instead of planting trees, Daltun focused on two actions: excluding grazing animals and removing invasive rhododendron. The results exceeded expectations. Native oak, hazel, holly, willow, rowan, hawthorn, and birch regenerated naturally from surviving seed sources and ancient underground fungal networks. Within years, wildlife returned, including pine martens, otters, lesser horseshoe bats, and hundreds of native plant and insect species. We break down the science behind this transformation: ecological succession, mycorrhizal networks, Atlantic rainforest restoration, native woodland regeneration, and how passive rewilding can sometimes outperform expensive restoration projects. • The fencing of twenty-one and a half acres to exclude sheep, goats, and deer • The long-term removal of invasive Rhododendron ponticum • The natural return of native woodland, wildlife, streams, and rainforest biodiversity We explores ecological restoration, rewilding, biodiversity recovery, and the hidden systems allowing ecosystems to rebuild themselves. #rewilding #rainforest #nature #documentary
