His work is specialized in the area of Yucatec Maya language and culture, with particular emphasis on the cognitive and linguistic aspects of this field. In 2010, the American Anthropological Association honored Professor Hanks with the Edward Sapir Book Award for his historical analysis of the crucial role played by language during the Spanish colonization of the Yucatec Maya, Converting Words: Maya in the Age of the Cross. He completed his post-graduate work at the University of Chicago and has served as a Milton H. Wilson Professor of the Humanities at Northwestern University in addition to his work at the University of California, Berkeley.
