He studies the communication process between the object and the user to produce products and services that satisfy human and societal needs, both practical and emotional. He brings a unique mix of the social sciences and engineering to bear on everyday products. Dr. Norman was a cognitive science professor at UC San Diego (founding chair of the department) and Northwestern University, as well as cofounder of the Nielsen Norman Group and former Vice President of Apple Computer’s Advanced Technology Group. Dr. Norman is the director of The Design Lab at UC San Diego and author of 20 books. He is best known for his books “The Design of Everyday Things,” "”Emotional Designs" and “Living in Complexity." He was awarded the Benjamin Franklin medal in Computer and Cognitive Science, and was listed as “one of the world’s most influential designers” by BusinessWeek.
