Disused Cheltenham Railways Foss Cross
Disused Cheltenham Railways Foss Cross Station. On the route of the Midland South Western Junction railway which ran from the midlands to Southampton We have been following this line from Cheltenham. Initially this was the station for Chedworth which is over a mile and a half away. Since the railway actually ran through the centre of Chedworth the villagers were not impressed and petitioned the Midland railway company, who eventually built a station in Chedworth. The result was that the passenger numbers severely reduced at Foss Cross and before closure to passenger traffic in 1957, it had one passenger per day, which was an elderly lady who caught the train to Cirencester, one stop down the line. Never the less Foss Cross had a vibrant freight business transporting not only agricultural produce, but also water for use in the local quarries which had their own sidings linked to the main line here. This is the only station site that I have visited that actually has a station building standing, perhaps reflecting its remote location which has proved a deterrent to both vandals and graffitists. The line was eventually closed to all traffic in the 1960’s
