Disused Railway in Chedworth woods with Impressive Tunnel
Chedworth on the abandoned Midland South West Junction Railway. Starting in the middle of the woods close to the Roman Villa. From here you can appreciate the work involved with embankments, cuttings and tunnels, it’s got the lot. Chedworth itself is a beautiful Cotswold village built with lovely honey coloured oolitic limestone. The railway runs through here on an embankment then a cutting and another embankment, with a beautiful blue brick structure forming impressive abutments to a splendid road bridge in the middle. Initially Chedworth didn’t have its own station, even though the railway ran through the centre of the village. Instead would-be passengers had to walk a mile and a half to Foss Cross to board the train. This was unacceptable to the village residents who petitioned the railway and were eventually awarded a station of their own. It is said that when the last ever train ran through here, the driver stopped the engine, walked to the pub, the famous ‘Seven Tuns’, had a pint, returned to the engine and carried on.
