The Hard Part Wasn’t the Tahoe Rim Trail

I thought this Tahoe Rim Trail backpacking trip would be pretty straightforward. The trail turned out to be the easy part. We picked up another section of the Tahoe Rim Trail at Big Meadow and headed toward Echo Summit with six people who all moved through the outdoors differently. The kids were faster than ever. Turtle wanted to slow down and take in the trail. My sister hadn’t hiked like this in more than 30 years. And somewhere between the first climb, a harder-than-expected day, and a few moments of losing visual contact with each other, the real challenge became clear: this wasn’t about the miles. It was about learning how to share a backpacking trip without expecting everyone to have the same pace, the same comfort level, or the same reason for being there. This is a grounded family backpacking story about the Tahoe Rim Trail, adjusting to each other, and what “success” looks like when six different hikers try to finish together.
