She Was Called "The Black B****" And "A Quota Hire" By A Colleague #blackwoman #toxicworkplace
Dr. Mel Robinson-Brown had a feeling something was wrong at her job. She just could not prove it yet. She was a Licensed Black Woman Psychologist showing up with excellence and integrity. Something about the way a colleague behaved behind closed doors told her that something was not right. When she took her concerns to her boss — her boss dismissed her and called her immature. She was told that wanting another administrator present during difficult conversations was not reasonable. However, when the students filed a complaint. Everything that had been happening behind closed doors came to light. This colleague who was another Psychologist, had been referring to Dr. Robinson-Brown as "The Black B****", a "quota hire", and "incompetent" in conversations with others in the workplace. Furthermore, this colleague had been telling the students Dr. Robinson-Brown was supervising — not to trust her. The colleague was reportedly eventually dismissed for her poor work performance as a Training Director and negative treatment towards Dr. Robinson-Brown. When the Training Director was dismissed, Dr. Robinson-Brown was promoted to become a Training Director. There was a catch however with her promotion. The company informed her that the American Psychological Association was requiring Co-Training Directors. Consequently, Dr. Robinson-Brown was asked her to share the role — with a white man who was three years her junior. This is not just one Black Woman's story. This is the story of what so many Black Women professionals navigate in silence — racism and sexism that operates behind closed doors, gaslighting that makes you question what you know to be true, and institutions that dismiss your concerns until they can no longer ignore the evidence. In this conversation, we will cover: ✔️ What it looks like when racism and bias operate behind closed doors — and how to trust yourself when you cannot yet prove what you know to be true; ✔️ What gaslighting in the workplace actually looks like and how it affects your confidence, your performance, and your mental health; ✔️ How institutions protect themselves rather than the people inside them and what that looks like in practice; ✔️ How being dismissed by leadership when you raise concerns about racism compounds the harm; ✔️ What it feels like to finally be validated only to have the institution still find a way to minimize your advancement; ✔️ How Dr. Robinson-Brown navigated the aftermath and what she knows now about protecting herself in toxic professional environments; ✔️ What she would tell every Black Woman who is currently sitting in a workplace where something feels wrong but she cannot yet prove it; ✔️ How she pivoted from toxic job survivor to Group Practice Owner and Keynote Speaker and what that journey actually looked like. This conversation is for you if: You have ever known something was wrong at work but been dismissed when you raised it; You are a Licensed Black Mental Health Professional navigating a workplace that does not see you or protect you; Or you are ready to understand what institutional betrayal actually looks like and what to do.
