How goods are destroyed to increase wealth, and how this process leads to social erosion. Raquel Varela is a historian. Researcher at the Institute of Contemporary History of the Nova University of Lisbon, where she coordinates the Global History of Labor and Social Conflicts Group, and researcher at the International Institute of Social History, where she coordinates the international project In the Same Boat? Shipbuilding and ship repair workers around the World (1950-2010). She coordinates the project History of Labor Relations in the Lusophone World. She holds a PhD in Political and Institutional History (ISCTE – University Institute of Lisbon). She is currently President of the International Association Strikes and Social Conflicts. She is vice-coordinator of the Network for the Study of Labor, the Workers' Movement and Social Movements in Portugal.
