Scoliosis patients often ask if scoliosis can be corrected with exercises. It is also common for patients to ask if scoliosis can be stopped. The best way to answer these questions is to know what scoliosis is. And the fact is that scoliosis is not a curable condition, but it is a very manageable condition, especially when detected and treated early. Scoliosis is a progressive physical condition that attacks the spine, and it mostly progresses during the growth stages of life. The problem with this is that the body has grown and adapted to this curve, that is why scoliosis can be managed and reduced, but there is no definitive cure. Even when patients decide to get spinal surgery, this only manages the condition and reduces it in size, but it doesn't cure it. The normal condition of the spine includes spinal flexibility, but when scoliosis happens, it creates an asymmetrical curvature, which creates spinal rigidity. So, if a patient were to bend out of their curve, the curve will remain because their spine is no longer flexible due to the rigidity component brought on by their scoliosis. Proactive treatments are meant to manage the patient's curve and handle the rigidity as curves become larger. This is one of the main aspects when thinking about scoliosis prevention, and a part of this is the influence that exercise has as part of the treatment. There are two types of exercises a patient can do: General Exercises Scoliosis Specific Exercises The first type is exercises done for general health, which most of us do for strength, flexibility, and cardiovascular health. However, these exercises will not have an impact on your scoliotic curve. Now SSE or Scoliosis Specific Exercises are designed specifically to target a patient's scoliosis and how it has grown—aiming to reduce the curve and manage its growth long term. As scoliosis progresses, curves become stiffer and, therefore, more difficult to exercise with the normal range of movement the patient's spine can do, and only so much change can happen. Despite doing scoliosis specific exercises, this will not cure it. Scoliosis requires an integrative approach, and exercises are only one part of the treatment. A big aspect that will make a difference to the treatment is flexibility and how much it can be improved. Intensive treatment or in-office care, with all the machinery used, will help make the curve more flexible, so when the patient exercises at home, they will have better results. It is important to note exercises do not affect bone structure. For example, if a patient has an asymmetrical bone structure on the ribs, it will not be changed by the exercises because these only work with muscles. In situations like these, corrective bracing comes to play to help the treatment process and slowly put those ribs back into place. So, when patients improve flexibility and combine that with corrective style bracing to move bones to a better position, this is when exercise will play a big part and help strengthen the muscles of the spine. Exercises alone will not help correct a curve of 20 degrees or more. And scoliosis exercises are a part of proper scoliosis treatment. Still, they need to be combined with a complete scoliosis treatment program to cover all aspects of the curve and achieve a reduction.
