Woodturning a sphere with a bit of help from a Paul Howard jig
As practice for turning a larger commission piece sphere I thought I'd have a go with a borrowed Paul Howard sphere jig system. I've previously done spheres by hand just using basic geometry and sometimes a template. Not that super accuracy has ever been a key issue as I'm not turning bowling balls. The jig worked out okay, but for doing one offs it's a bit of a fiddle. Although I am sure it would get quicker with practice. I guess it is really intended for production or highly accurate work. And to give enough clearance for the jig to fully sweep side to side you do need to make sure there is adequate waste at each end of the main blank. Maybe around 10cm or so. This seems quite a lot to waste or else you need to face the hassle of gluing on tenon blocks. What do you think? @Paulhowardwoodturner
