It follows Takao Kasuga, an elementary school student fascinated by literature, especially Les Fleurs du Mal (1857) by Charles Baudelaire, whose reading serves as the symbolic axis of the narrative. Set in contemporary Japan, the work explores the relationship between Kasuga, the enigmatic and nihilistic Sawa Nakamura, and the seemingly "pure" Nanako Saeki, constructing a psychological drama about desire, shame, transgression, and identity. The direct reference to Baudelaire is not merely nominal: the concept of spleen—understood as existential unease, profound boredom, and repulsion for a hypocritical social morality—is transposed to the adolescent experience, a phase marked by the intensification of emotions, the feeling of inadequacy, and the discovery of the body and desire under constant social scrutiny. The work was adapted into an anime in 2013, directed by Hiroshi Nagahama, notable for its controversial use of rotoscoping, which reinforces the strangeness and psychological discomfort of the story, even though it divided critics and audiences. Aku no Hana consolidated Oshimi as one of the main authors to treat adolescence not as nostalgia, but as crisis, rupture, and a limit experience.
