It tells the story of Akira Fudo, a young man who merges with the demon Amon to fight other demonic entities and protect humanity, but ends up facing the corruption of the human world itself. Released simultaneously as a manga and anime, the manga adopted a much darker and more apocalyptic tone, culminating in one of the most shocking endings in Japanese comic book history. The work has had several adaptations, including the controversial Netflix anime Devilman Crybaby (2018). Go Nagai is also responsible for popularizing the mecha genre with Mazinger Z (1972) and mahou shoujo with Cutie Honey (1973), in addition to influencing the grotesque aesthetic and social critique in later works. His legacy echoes in manga like Berserk, especially in the characters of Guts and Griffith, and in games like Dark Souls, with their dark atmospheres, themes of downfall and redemption, and epic-scale monsters. In this video, I discuss the Devilman manga, Shin Devilman, the importance of Go Nagai, his influence on Berserk and Dark Souls, and explore themes such as nihilism, misanthropy, the end of the world, and disappointment with humanity.
