In reality, Margaret Drysdale is in Boston seeking treatment for an ailment that her doctors insist doesn’t exist. Further comments from Drysdale to Granny inadvertently reinforce the idea that Margaret has a drinking problem. During a visit to the Clampett mansion, Drysdale teaches them how to use the telephone when Margaret calls. She has discovered that the Clampetts are her new neighbors and expresses a desire to meet them to ensure they’re suitable. Milburn, hoping to avoid an awkward encounter, insists that she remain in Boston. However, Miss Jane informs him that Margaret is already on her way home. In a bid to keep the Clampetts and Margaret apart, Drysdale devises a plan to send the family to Palm Springs. Miss Jane encourages the idea, suggesting that Elly May, who shocks Jed and Granny by wearing a tiny bathing suit, should enter the “Princess of Palm Springs” beauty contest. When Miss Jane accidentally reveals that Drysdale’s motive is to delay Margaret's meeting them, Jed agrees to leave as a favor to him. Believing the Clampetts are out of town, Drysdale brings Margaret to the mansion. However, when Margaret encounters Jethro holding a shotgun, she faints. Jed and Granny find her unconscious in the car and, based on their earlier assumptions, conclude that she must be drunk.
