How has this once uninhabited island changed since then? We covered the area from the ground and the air. Before construction began, the island was gentle and without any undulations, but now, even if you try to approach by boat, a large wall stands in the way, making it difficult to get a glimpse of what's happening on the island. Heavy machinery and vehicles are constantly in operation everywhere. On this day, fishermen who are calling on the national government to halt construction disembarked, requesting access to the common land that has been used jointly by fishermen until now. (Sumio Hamada) "The militarization construction has progressed so far that it feels like there's nothing we can do about it." The Ministry of Defense began construction of a Self-Defense Force base on Mageshima three years ago, in January 2023. The purpose of this project is to strengthen the defense capabilities of the Nansei Islands and to relocate the U.S. military's Carrier-Based Landing Practice Facility (FCLP) from Iwo Jima in Tokyo. The base layout plan released by the Ministry of Defense calls for the construction of two runways, a control tower, and barracks for personnel. Aerial footage showed steady progress in the construction of key facilities. The number of workers on the island has now peaked at over 6,000. The Ministry of Defense has set the base's completion date at March 2030, three years later than originally planned, but it appears that construction of key facilities is already well ahead of schedule. Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi has emphasized "early commencement of operations." The Ministry of Defense has budgeted 127 billion yen for base construction in its initial budget proposal for next fiscal year. However, the total project cost has not been disclosed. In addition, the Ministry of Defense plans to increase the number of Air Self-Defense Force advance troops, which began working on Mageshima this fiscal year, from the current 60 to approximately 90 in the new fiscal year.
