This is where young recruits take their very first step as airmen of the Japan Air Self-Defense Force. Each year, around 1,200 of them enlist and face roughly three months of demanding basic training. The day begins with the sound of the bugle. Flawless marching, rifle drills, and physical training that pushes them to their limits. In an unfamiliar world, these young recruits give everything they have, side by side with their comrades. Quietly supporting their efforts through food are the culinary professionals known as "kyuyoin" — the base's cooks. On this day, lunch is curry — about 1,400 servings of it. Cooked all at once in giant rotating pots, every plate carries a single wish: "After hard training, they deserve something warm and good."
