Winter Weekend Restoration - Saving Pap's 65 Year Old Stanley No 4 Hand Plane
This week in Matt's Garage , I'm finally getting around to restoring a vintage Stanley Bailey No.4 Smoothing Plane that was a gift from my wife's grandfather many years ago. Based on characteristics like patent dates( or lack of ), a raised ring under the front knob, color and shape, this is a type 19 plane dating to 1948-1961. It still has it's original iron and the wooden handles are intact as well, just needing a complete refinishing. There is very little rust thankfully, mainly between the blade and chip breaker and on the body where the original finish is wearing off. I've been restoring/refinishing vintage tools and generally old, cool stuff for a few years now and really enjoy the discovery, education and satisfaction from saving a piece of history. So join me on this wintry weekend for a relaxing and very rewarding journey of the saving of this very special Stanley Bailey No 4 Hand Plane. I hope Pap is proud! #restoration #vintage #tools
