Gorilla Mokolo Chooses N'neka! #gorillas

Welcome back to Larry's Animal Safari! This visit took place during a reproductive weekend at Cleveland Metroparks Zoo. As the morning begins, N'neka quietly settles in to enjoy her browse, but it doesn't take long for the silverback gorilla Mokolo to focus his attention on her. Throughout this 13-minute video, you'll see Mokolo follow N'neka around the outdoor habitat while the rest of the troop gradually adjusts their own positions and activities. What starts as a calm morning soon becomes a fascinating lesson in gorilla social behavior. Watch for Mokolo's vocalizations, a brief mating sequence, and the subtle ways the other gorillas respond as the silverback's attention remains fixed on one particular female. Gorilla social interactions often unfold through movement, positioning, and quiet observation. On this day, one gorilla's decisions influenced the behavior of the entire troop. FYI The breeding of gorillas in accredited zoos is carefully managed through the Gorilla Species Survival Plan (SSP), a program coordinated by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. The SSP studies each gorilla's age, health, genetics, and family relationships to determine which animals should breed and when. Its goal is to maintain a healthy, genetically diverse population of western lowland gorillas while ensuring the highest standards of animal care. As a result, gorilla births in zoos are usually the result of years of planning and cooperation among many institutions. Every baby gorilla born at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo, including Kayembe, Kunda, and Jameela's arrival into the troop, is part of a long-term conservation effort designed to help sustain a healthy gorilla population for future generations. Female gorillas in the North American AZA (Assoc. of Zoos and Aquariums) are on birth control. Future offspring are planned very carefully by the Gorilla SSP (Species Survival Plan) professionals who are part of the AZA.
