Why This 'Upgraded' Ukrainian Carrier Was Redesigned Using Its Own Battlefield Losses
The BTR-4MV1 "Bucephalus" is Ukraine's most advanced armored personnel carrier — redesigned in the middle of a real war using lessons learned from its own battlefield losses. Built by the Kharkiv Morozov Machine Building Design Bureau, Ukraine's state defense manufacturer responsible for the T-64 and T-84 tank families, the BTR-4 entered serial production in 2008 at the Zhytomyr Armored Plant. Approximately 250 vehicles have been delivered to Ukrainian forces across all variants. The BTR-4MV1 is the deepest upgrade yet — a completely reworked hull with sloped frontal armor, deleted glass panels replaced by armored vision slits and cameras, modular ceramic and spaced armor rated to NATO STANAG protection levels, mine-resistant crew seating, and a 450hp Deutz engine paired with an Allison transmission. It carries a BM-7 Parus remote weapon station with a 30mm autocannon, grenade launcher, and Barrier anti-tank missiles — operated entirely from inside the hull. From Sloviansk in 2014 to Mariupol in 2022, the Bucephalus has been tested against Russian armor under live combat conditions. The BTR-4MV1 prototype fought in the Kharkiv counteroffensive that recaptured over 6,000 square kilometers in two weeks. How does it compare to the Russian BTR-82A, the American Bradley, and the Swedish CV90? Watch to find out.
