La historia del Shorthorn, la raza fundadora de la ganadería: cómo llegó a la Argentina en 1823
Fabián García, manager of the Argentine Shorthorn Association, highlighted that it is one of the foundation breeds worldwide. He indicated that the first herdbook ever—that is, the book where pedigree animals are registered—had the Shorthorn breed as its first entry. In Argentina, the breed arrived in 1823 thanks to John Miller, a rancher who owned a property in Cañuelas called La Caledonia. "He imported a bull named Tarquino, which is the one represented with the little head on Criadores whisky. From then on, the importation of the breed began," he recalled. "In establishments like this one (El Campito), for example, the animals are pasture-raised, without supplementation. It's a demanding area, like Bordenave, where the fields are harsh and rainfall can be scarce. However, when conditions are favorable, heavy export-quality animals are achieved in a complete cycle, which clearly demonstrates that the breed can perform perfectly with this biotype," he concluded at the IPCVA event.
