Crystal Soft was a small software house founded in 1980 by Yoshiyuki Morita, president of the company who ran a rock music studio in Osaka, after he encountered the PC-8001 and quit his corporate job to work with Mr. Kono. From its unique company culture, where "the president and all the employees came from the music industry," Crystal Soft produced numerous RPGs that emphasized storytelling. Its flagship title is "Mugen no Shinzou" (Heart of Illusion), released in 1984 by Kazunari Tomi. It is said to be one of the earliest works in Japan to use the term "experience points," and later, Akira Sakuma publicly stated that he referenced it in the design of Momotaro Densetsu (Momotaro Legend), and Dragon Quest is said to have adopted a similar system. It can be considered one of the origins of Japanese RPGs. Crystal Soft produced numerous masterpieces that defined the early days of PC gaming in the 1980s, including "Lizard," highly acclaimed for its 3D graphics and animated combat; "Fantasian," a fusion of Wizardry and Ultima; and the "Crimson" series with its strikingly red world. However, in October 1990, Crystal Soft, facing financial difficulties, was rescued and merged with T&E Soft, and its name disappeared. Sword World PC, which was under development at the time of the merger, was later completed by T&E Soft's Osaka Development Department. And it was the people who left this company who, in fact, left a significant mark on the history of Japanese games. Kazunari Tomi, who created Mugen no Shinzou, worked on Sorcerian Dinosaur at Nihon Falcom, and later, after going independent, created the LUNAR series at Studio Alex. Even after the company went bankrupt following a lawsuit, he continued to create games at Gainax. Chihiro Fujioka and Takashi Sasai, who were in charge of music, both moved to Square in 1990. Fujioka later became the director of Super Mario RPG and founded AlphaDream, where he worked on Mario & Luigi RPG. Sasai worked on Rudra no Hihou and Bushido Blade 2.
