Hamburg: Güterzüge im Hafen – Rangierbetrieb Hohe Schaar

Filmed on April 4, 2019 In the port of Hamburg, close to the Rethe bridge, there is the shunting station Hohe Schaar. The old Rethe bridge (which was visible from far away due to its two large towers) is currently being demolished. It has been replaced by a modern swing bridge. A Voith Gravita Diesel engine of DB is shunting with bulk freight cars. The track runs parallel to the street Blumensand. Meanwhile a train with a Vossloh G 6 engine of Hamburger Rail Service is coming from the North (Neuhof). It is passing the Rethe swing bridge and going to Hohe Schaar station. In the backgound you can see Moorburg power station, one of the most innovative coal power plants in Europe. Finally you can see a class 295 engine, belonging to Ham Rail Port, on Kattwyk bridge. This is also a lifting bridge which can be opened for passing ships. A road with two tracks is leading across the bridge. In the middle of it there is a single track railway line, electrified. When trains are passing, the road is closed by bars. As long as no trains are passing, the overhead wires are interrupted. They are connected by a motor-driven mechanism when trains are passing, even when the train is headed by a Diesel locomotive.
