Güterumgehungsbahn Hamburg: Züge in Hamburgs Nordwesten

Scenes from the northern part of the freight bypass line. This line is leading round the north and east of Hamburg. Freight trains going through Hamburg can bypass the central station, which is already close to its limit of train movements. The scenes in this video were filmed along the northern section where the freight bypass line is running parallel to Kollau walking track. Kollau is an affluent of river Alster; it has been re-naturized during the past years. From the abutments of several bridges you can see that this railway line has been designed for 2-track operation. One of the approach lanes of Hamburg airport is leading along here as well. Along the southern side of the embankments noise barriers have been built at many places. On the northern side you can see the trains well, at least in winter and spring when trees are without leaves. Further westward the railway line and the walking track pass across the motorway A 7. The line makes a curve towards Hamburg-Eidelstedt. In the northwest of Hamburg the former Lokstedt freight station was closed. This area is now re-used as a living quarter, as several thousand apartments are to be built in Hamburg every year. Along the freight bypass line a large noise barrier has been built with a brick wall on top and 3 windows in the wall. On top there is a place to sit down. On the other side of the windows you can see Hamburg-Lokstedt crossing station, a station with 2 tracks just for the purpose that trains can pass by each other. Here is a completely new place where you can watch trains.
