In 1991, in a small workshop in Dorset, England, Ray Christopher, owner of GT Developments, who had by then sold over three hundred replicas of the legendary Ford GT40, finally decided to build his own supercar—a modern successor to the very car that brought Enzo Ferrari to his knees in the 1960s. Thus was born the Spectre R42—a British mid-engine supercar with an aluminum honeycomb monocoque, a 4.6-liter V8 from Ford, a 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) time of 4.5 seconds, and a top speed of 175 mph (280 km/h). The car was hand-built in Poole, tuned with five-time Le Mans winner Sir Derek Bell, featured in a Hollywood film starring David Arquette and Famke Janssen, and sold in Sweden, England, Denmark, and Belgium. But things didn't go as planned. GT Developments went bankrupt a few months after its premiere, and the project was saved by Swedish entrepreneur Anders Hildebrand. The RPM film went straight to VHS. The racing version of the R42 GTR never made it to the starting line, and the cost of each car exceeded its selling price. In 1998, Spectre Supersports Limited quietly closed, leaving only 23 cars built. Today, the Spectre R42 is one of the rarest and most undervalued supercars of the 1990s, appearing on the insert of Turbo gum alongside the Lamborghini Diablo and Bugatti EB110.
