This issue tells the story of one of the rarest and most forgotten supercars in the world, whose silhouette many of us first saw on the thin paper insert of a Turbo chewing gum. The Schuppan 962CR was born at the height of the Japanese economic bubble of the late 1980s, a road-going successor to the legendary Porsche 962 racing car, built by Australian Le Mans champion Vernon Schuppan. The car boasted a racing engine producing around 600 horsepower, a carbon fiber body, a leather interior, and a claimed top speed of over 340 kilometers per hour. The price at the time of its announcement was around $1.7 million, four times the price of a new Ferrari F40 of the era. But this story isn't one of triumph, but of collapse. Of the promised fifty units, only about five were built. The Japanese bubble burst at the worst possible moment, customers abandoned their cars en masse, Schuppan's company went bankrupt, and the creator himself found himself embroiled in lawsuits. Today, the surviving examples are hidden in private collections, primarily in Japan, and are valued at over two and a half million dollars.
