Customer Almost Cancelled, Then Changed Everything
This is the first time I've ever turned Oak Burl, and these specimens were sent to me by the customer (who was a joy to work with, btw). He not only harvested these burls himself, but he also happens to be a fellow woodturner. He originally reached out to me over 18 months ago and pitched the idea of making something big out of his burls. In the following months, he sent 6 or 7 burls, which went directly into my wood-drying kiln, out of sight and out of mind for almost a year, because we knew full well that extensive drying time would be necessary. His one specification was to make the piece as big as possible, and that's when I knew two things. The first was that I would likely need to wait for winter to do the epoxy resin pour in lieu of having a refrigerator big enough to prevent an extremely large casting from thermal cracking while it cured. The second thing I knew was that I would need a huge pressure pot to ensure that the resin would properly stabilize the oak burls. That's when I stumbled upon finishsystems.com and their giant 20 gallon pressure pot that was preconfigured for resin casting. Several emails, phone calls, and months later, their 20 gallon and 2.5 gallon pressure pots arrived at my shop with the only stipulation being that they would be featured in a video. They did not pay me, but I convinced them to offer my audience an exclusive discount (see below). I had initially presented the customer with a range of sketches and ideas for design, and with the customer's decision in focus, I proceeded to puzzle the burls together and to develop 3D mold. I was fortunate that my 3D printer was just big enough to handle the print, and it was even more satisfying when the sketchy bandsaw procedure resulted in a perfectly snug fit (after some intense negotiations using 40 grit sandpaper... off camera, of course). At that point, I sent progress photos to the customer, and he immediately called me and asked for a big change.
