[Jeonghyun Choi Master Final Recital] When Spinoza’s Ethics Meets Jazz ARTIST NOTE - This concert is a journey through imagined worlds shaped by Spinoza’s Ethics and my own experiences. Through composition and improvisation, I explore substance, sadness, abjection, remorse, and the possibility of freedom. The music moves between philosophical experiment and personal vulnerability. 01. Substance and Mode: This piece is based on Book I of Spinoza’s Ethics. The right hand stays on the note C, representing substance, while the left hand improvises freely as the modes that follow from it. For Spinoza, modes are necessary expressions of substance. I bring this idea into improvisation by treating each sound as something that could only happen in that particular moment.
